Taking food and other items into Barbados in your suitcase

Hi, we are going to Barbados for the second time at the end of January 2011. Having been before we found food in the supermarket quite expensive and plan to take what we can with us in our suitcases. Obvious things like tea, coffee, but does anyone have a useful shopping list of things they take to Barbados which they would share with me? Thanks

It really depends where you go to shop to find things expensive. You won't have a problem bringing tea, coffee, Cereals and biscuits but you can forget bringing any kind of meat or poultry cos you need to get a licence to bring anything in like that. You also have the weight issue to consider as the luggage allowances have been reduced bringing tins of things might prove a little weighy. My advice would be to eat where we eat and you can't go far wrong because bajans are very particular about their food!!!

I can't imagine what you would want to bring apart from a coffee that you can't get in Supercentre/ Big B's ( I bring Nescafe' Alta Rici cooffee because you can't get it ) Meat is better and cheaper -------------------no point in bringing fruit and veg cos it would go off, and it's not allowed I don't think--------------What else is there that you can't get ?? Food prices are , on the whole, similar to the U K . !

For a good filling lunch go to the Village Deli in Supercentre Sunset Crest for about 15bds you will get a good meal. Also any of the food vans who serve the workers around and about they serve good local food. I would bring your own cereals tho cos they can be double the price of UK.

..... generally nothing ...Marmite some years ago when I was not sure about it's availability
...whilst CERTAIN things are more expensive than the UK .... other things are cheaper /better
...and I prefer to support the local eceonmy
.....and have you actually worked out EXACTLY how much you will be saving on what you are able to take???
See here for SuperCentre prices http://www.supercentre.com/shop.html
Might be better to use the weight allowence on sun tan lotion!!!

I recently took down quite a bit of meat. I'm a foodie so I didn't take down your average supermarket stuff either. For me it's got nothing to do with price but quality. I bought some Barbadian bacon in St Lucia last year and it was paper thin. I took down waygu burgers, bacon, breakfast sausages, meatballs and one package of chicken sausages. No problem on weight and the 2 cooler bags went back with 1 bottle St Nicholas Abby 12yr, 3 medium sized rum cakes, 2 375ml glass bottles of Barbadian pepper sauce and a bottle of Agnostura (sp??) bitters. I never took a look at the meat in the supermarket but my wife did and made a comment I can't repeat here.
One thing I did find was that the fruits in season in St Lucia don't make it to Barbados (125km away). I never saw passion fruits, starfruits, soursops, sour apples etc. I guess there just isn't much inter-island trade.

Sue is right......you need a permit for meat. That being said I know a lot of people still do it. The last time we did was the year the permit was required but we were unaware. They let us through and said next time bet a permit before you arrive. I tried to do that this time and the number on the customs web site is not in service. I personally did not want to take the chance of spending the money and having the meat confiscated We did bring down a few packs of feta in oil with olives...........well used. We also brought some laughing cow cheese and it is cheaper at the B Big than it was at Walmart in Canada. I am sure the cow is really laughing now. We also brought some nuts, microwave popcorn and pringles along with our coffee that you can't buy here. The next time we come down we will only bring a few snack stuff plus the coffee. We find it interesting to be creative and try to make the most tasty cost effective meal you can with what is here. We also really use our left overs unlike at home...........gives some satisfaction. With the items we have left over that we know we will not use we make up a plate and give it to someone. Enjoy.

We take tea, coffee, cereal and nibbles (peanuts/pringles) if we have room. I found Sainsburys Value Peanuts really cheap and great to squish into a corner of a suitcase. Having said that, I don't think we ate all that we took alst year, so won't take so much next time.
Apart from that, we buy everything locally and what isn't used (e.g. washing up liquid) gets left for the cleaning lady at the apartment.

Hi fizzypopboo, one of the greatest reasons to go to Barbados is for the food. Any real foodie would know that, Barbados has its own Zaggat survey. Maybe you are finding prices high it is because you aren't going for local stuff. Barbados is not south-east asia where you might have to wonder what you are eating. They eat much the same things as we eat prepared differently. Look for things such as fresh fish, poultry and mutton, which are produced locally. I'm not too sure if beef and pork are produced locally. I'm from Canada and I didn't find the prices in Barbados to be any higher than those in Canada, and I'm not under the impression that stuff is any cheaper in the UK than it is in Canada.
It's also generally good to look for fruits annd vegetables the haven;t been imported from an island, but have been grown right in Barbados. Try the markets in Bridgetown for instance. Try to live your life like a Bajan might while you are there. Think about it, Bajans probably make half or less what the average Britt does, so it is absurd to think they support the kind of lifestyle they do if they pay more for necessities, so maybe where you were shopping was more geared towards tourists, maybe you need to find out where the locals shop.
I also have to say I resent Mikeycanuck's implication that the food quality in Barbados is not up to snuff. I suspect he is a picky eater, and I would know because I am one too. Perhaps if the food is so good at home he should stay there, rather than travelling with half a butchershop.
